FAQ
The official language of Belize is English. Spanish, Garifuna, Creole, and various Mayan dialects are also widely spoken.
Belize (including it’s outlying islands) is a safe country. However, tourists should exercise caution, just as one would when traveling to any other destination. For example, we recommend that you not carry large amounts of cash, avoid wearing flashy jewelry or walking alone at night. Basically, exercise common sense and sound judgment.
All outlets are 110 volts and 60 hertz, the same as that used in the USA.
We understand that water safety is a concern for international travelers. Grand Caribe has it’s own, purified water source and while many find it perfectly safe to drink from the tap or refrigerator dispensers (w/charcoal filters) within the condos, we encourage our guests…especially those with a more sensitive system, to drink only bottled water. Tap water in all Belize locations is not necessarily safe to drink and we recommend you NOT do so. Most restaurants provide bottled water.
There are generally two seasons in Belize; Winter Season…which is mild and relatively dry and Summer Season…which is warmer and occasionally humid. The official rainy season is June through November. Due to the proximity to the Sea and prevailing trade winds, temperatures on Ambergris Caye are much milder than those on mainland Belize…in the low to mid 80’s during the day and high 70’s during the evenings. Perfect!
Belize is a tropical location, so yes. Fortunately, the prevailing breezes on Ambergris Caye help to keep them at bay! Sand flies, or noseeums, are tiny creatures that bite like mosquitoes. When there is little or no breeze, they can come out at dusk. We recommend that you travel with DEET based insect repellant and you might consider bringing hydrocortisone cream and/or Benadryl to soothe an itch.
All foreign nationals need a passport to enter Belize. While citizens of the United States, Canada and most western European countries do not require a visa, citizens of some countries do. Please refer to your home country’s governmental travel requirements and secure any necessary documents well in advance of your travel date.
While it’s recommended that you have a current tetanus/diphtheria vaccination, tourists do not need any special vaccinations before coming to Belize, nor is it necessary to take any malaria preventatives. We strongly encourage you to bring an adequate supply of any medications that you require. As always, please consult with your physician and refer to your home country’s governmental travel requirements.
International guests arriving to Belize will fly into the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) located on mainland Belize.
